There is so much buzz about the brain lately. It seems everyone is jumping on the brain health bandwagon. Be very discerning about marketing. There are products that claim to boost brain power and a few companies have been charged with false advertising. For example, one company added a tiny bit of gingko biloba (not enough to make a difference) to a beverage, and called it a “brain healthy” drink.
There are drugs that also claim to boost brain power. Although they likely have a positive effect, be very careful about side effects, a common occurrence with pharmaceuticals. There are some very questionable products that claim to elevate your “Theta” waves to encourage creativity and intuition. These can be dangerous mainly because too much activity of these brain patterns can lead to fear, paranoia, and unrealistic thoughts.
There is also a buzz about Alpha wave stimulation and although an increased level of function can create happiness and a great sense of self, over-activation can also cause reduced focus and can interrupt sleep. These two wave patterns optimally should be balanced to each other, and without having access to technology that can read these patterns, one would not be able to monitor the effects of these devices.
The word “brain” or “brain power” is being inserted in advertising that does not have much to do with brain health at all. It has become quite trendy. It’s important to check out every claim, offering and process of brain wellness products and devices before using. It is your brain after all and you can find safe ways to keep it healthy.
