Well it’s been an up and down Spring so far! It is inevitable that great weather is coming very soon! This winter has been so very harsh for most of North America. In our region the assault of snowstorms and bitterly cold temperatures certainly caused many who already struggle with depression to dive deeper into the dark. I have seen many clients so far this year with emotionally driven issues. I am so fortunate to be able to help these clients lift the cloud and live a more productive and fulfilling life.
There are so many modalities out there. Recently there has been an onslaught of “brain treatments” which claim to raise theta lower beta, raise beta lower alpha, help the heart through the brain and so on. While I am no expert on other modalities, I am an expert on the one I chose to use. Let me tell you why.
First, I have experienced the benefits in a profound way for myself and for family members. Second, our process starts with a technically sound, EEG brainwave assessment, along with comprehensive survey questions in order to learn as much as I can about the client’s past and present. I am then able to design a personalized plan to address issues in the entire brain using holistic technology. Most of these other modalities do not offer this.
This also includes traditional and decades old neurofeedback systems. They seem to blindly “assume” a person has certain brain patterns if they demonstrate particular symptoms or behaviours. It is not that simple. The brain is very complex and each one is unique. Also, most of these processes do not help the entire brain, only focusing on one area. Changing one part of the brain can affect other parts, and if there is no monitoring of brainwave activity in these other areas, it could create other issues.
Let me ask you this… would allow a chiropractor to make adjustments to your spine without first taking an x-ray or other diagnostic image? Would you allow someone to perform surgery on your body without first viewing where the problem is? The answer is no. So why then would you buy some vibrational program over the internet for example, which emits sounds to “train” a certain part of the brain without knowing the uniqueness of your brain? Why would you buy a home system and give yourself “treatments” without having proper training or even knowing what is going on in your brain? Why would you trust a set of numbers or words to stimulate certain areas of the brain without being able to monitor the brain’s activity?
I believe some of these modalities may have benefit to some degree. I have however in recent months had clients who came to me after trying some of these processes, actually feeling worse. This has led me to write this article. Please investigate and scrutinize any modality that claims to change your brain before you sign up! You can schedule a 15 minute complimentary consultation by choosing an available time on my calendar. I would be happy to explain Brainwave Optimization® and how it might help you, no obligation.
In keeping with my comments above, many clients come to me having tried just about “everything”. This includes loading up to the max with every fad supplement known to man. As a natural health expert, yes I do believe in supplements, but less is better than more. Here are 4 basic supplements everyone should take:
- Probiotics – healthy gut flora is crucial to great health… there is a definite connection between the gut and the brain. Probiotics prevent bacteria from taking over the body which can wreak havoc in every part of your body and brain.
- Omega 3 – whether it’s in the form of fish oil (my preference) or vegetarian varieties, be sure to take adequate amounts daily, and be sure your brand has a high DHA component (brain food!) and is also great for joints and skin, and is an anti-oxidant.
- Vitamin D – most people are deficient in this vitamin and in northern climates like Canada, we do not get enough from the sun. It can prevent colds, is anti-inflammatory, help for eyes and skin, heart and brain.
- Multi Vitamin – a good quality multi will fill in for those times we don’t get enough good nutrition from our food source. Of course fresh veggies and fruit, healthy fat and protein are always the best sources.
If you really must take additional supplements for certain ailments, always consult a professional. That is not always the salesperson in a health food store. It is astounding the buckets of supplements some people ingest regularly. Not only is it expensive but can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing.
I do take additional remedies, but only for specific issues and for limited periods. Healthy eating and exercise is still the best medicine!!!
Final thought… Be Careful Out There!!! (and beware)
